ไวรัสตับอักเสบบีมีชนิดของยีนที่แตกต่างกันอยู่ 8 ชนิด ตั้งแต่ชนิด A ถึงชนิด H โดยพบแตกต่างกันในแต่ละพื้นที่ ในเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้พบชนิดของยีนไวรัสตับอักเสบชนิด B และ C1,2 โดยยีนของไวรัสชนิด C จะพบได้บ่อยและมีการติดเชื้อจากมารดาสู่ทารกสูง3
นอกจากนี้การเปลี่ยนแปลงทางพันธุกรรมหรือ mutation ของยีน S ของไวรัสยังมีผลต่อการตอบสนองต่อภูมิคุ้มกันที่ป้องกันการติดเชื้อในทารกด้วย4
