ฮอร์โมนในนมแม่ที่ช่วยควบคุมการเจริญเติบโต ได้แก่ calcitonin และ somatostatin ในนมแม่จะมี calcitonin สูง1 ซึ่งจะมีผลต่อการเจริญเติบโตและการสร้างกระดูก เซลล์ประสาทในทางเดินอาหารจะมีตัวรับฮอร์โมน calcitonin ที่จะเกิดปฏิกิริยาและทำให้ออกฤทธิ์2 สำหรับ somatostation ปกติมีฤทธิ์ยับยั้งการเจริญเติบโต เมื่อได้รับผ่านเข้าสู่ทางเดินอาหารจะถูกย่อยทำลายและไม่ส่งผ่านเข้าสู่ผนังลำไส้ แต่เมื่ออยู่ในน้ำนม น้ำนมจะป้องกันการย่อยทำลายทำให้สามารถออกฤทธิ์ในช่องทางเดินอาหารได้3 บทบาทหน้าที่ในน้ำนมยังไม่ชัดเจน4
