สารที่ช่วยในการพัฒนาการของลำไส้และป้องกันภาวะซีด ได้แก่ erythropoietin สารนี้จะทำหน้าที่ในการกระตุ้นให้เกิดการสร้างเม็ดเลือดแดง? erythropoietin จะพบมากในนมแม่ ทารกที่คลอดก่อนกำหนดจะมีความเสี่ยงต่อการเกิดภาวะซีดจากการเสียเลือด พยาธิสภาพในลำไส้ หรือการทำงานที่ไม่สมบูรณ์ของระบบการสร้างเม็ดเลือดซึ่งจะมีผลทำให้การเจริญเติบโตและการพัฒนาการของทารกผิดปกติ¹ การให้ erythropoietin จะช่วยเพิ่มการความเข้มข้นของเลือดแต่ควรพิจารณาการเสริมธาตุเหล็กให้เพียงพอ^2-4 นอกจากนี้ erythropoietin ยังช่วยให้รอยต่อของเซลล์ที่ผนังลำไส้เกาะติดกันแน่นขึ้น⁵ มีรายงานว่าอาจช่วยลดการติดเชื้อ HIV จากมารดาสู่ทารก⁶และลดการเกิด necrotizing enterocolitis ลงได้^5,7
