ในมารดาที่มีการติดเชื้อไวรัสตับอักเสบบีเรื้อรังจะมีเชื้อไวรัสอยู่ในกระแสเลือด อยู่ในโพรงมดลูก และเกิดการติดเชื้อผ่านไปที่ทารกในระยะก่อนการคลอดได้ มีแนวคิดเรื่องการให้ยาป้องกันในระยะก่อนคลอด ได้แก่ การให้ Hepatitis B immunoglobulin ข้อมูลของการให้ immunoglobulin ในส่วนของประโยขน์ในการลดการติดเชื้อในระยะก่อนคลอดพบไม่แตกต่างกัน1 สำหรับยาต้านไวรัสมียาที่ใช้ลดปริมาณไวรัสหลายตัว ได้แก่ Lamivudine, Tenofovir, Telbivudine, Entecavir, Adefovir Dipivoxil และ Interferon ข้อมูลประสบการณ์ในการใช้ยายังมีน้อย ดังนั้นข้อแนะนำในการป้องกันการติดเชื้อไวรัสตับอักเสบบีในระยะก่อนคลอดจึงยังไม่มีข้อแนะนำที่ชัดเจนจำเป็นต้องการข้อมูลการศึกษาเพิ่มเติมมากขึ้น2-4
